accents?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-11 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
someone mentioned misfits in that rec thread and it got me thinking. i know people are pretty firmly against typing out accents for when characters speak, but what about kelly from misfits? people not being able to understand her sometimes is even part of the show, and i feel like it wouldn't even sound like her w/o it.

idk man, i think her diction is more important than how she says it. i've played against people who do type it out and don't, though. seeing "fook ya" a million times gets a little tiring, though.

i've wondered the same thing about lafayette reynolds. i've been wanting to pick him up, but the way he talks is so much a part of his sass and character, i'm not sure how well he'd come across with regular word usage.

things like 'you is' instead of 'you are' and 'yo'' instead if 'you'. this is probably the only reason i haven't picked him up yet, because i don't know how to write him properly without butchering his sass.

"you is" doesn't fall under typing out an accent, though. that's just grammar/word usage.

take this as an example; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1dXQFagmQY

it's not like he talks like 'kin ye all ken whut aye be talkin' 'bout'. it's less accent and more phonetic, i guess? i'm just wondering how annoyed people would get playing against someone that write/talks like this?

I wouldn't be annoyed at all.

Maybe because I have a bias. LAFAYETTE, ANON? You doin' good.

i would just really love to see more tb characters around. there aren't nearly enough (or nearly enough variety)

Don't type it phonetically is my only advice. Typing out things like "I enjoy fulfillin' the needs of my fellow mens," "how old is you?" and "ain't no freak can no other freak how to live" are going to be read in the proper accent anyway without you having to spell it out. Just be careful attention to the diction (read transcripts, etc.) and play off that.

the irony of typing advice about diction and forgetting words and putting in the wrong words is not lost on me.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-11 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
what about for things like dropping g's or other vowels/consonants? like with y'all and yo' when the doesn't clarify the 't' in things like don't.

"You don' wanna be comin' up in here wit yo panties all bunched up like dat."

would it be better to put it as

"You don't want to be comin' up in here with yo' panties all bunched up like that."

or is there another alternative?

The first one looks fine tbqh.

i sort of agree with you, especially since i think it describes the flavor of how he talks more, but i've also seen people get upset with characters that are written out like that because it makes it harder to read. i think it's fine because that really is the way he sounds, but i know the second example might be easier for people to read and not want to stab me or my character in the eyeball.

I wouldn't type out "that" like "dat," but that's a personal preference. The rest looks fine though. I played a character with a Bronx accent who would do that weird "th" to "d" thing and it just got aggravating to write and looked awful to me. But the rest is pretty much exactly how I typed it out.

thank you for the additional opinion. i'd love to get as many as possible before deciding on whether i can do him or not. the th/d thing was one of the points i was waffling on. i know he distinctly says it as a d sound, but i also know how frustrating it can be to keep tabs on writing it like that and to have to read it.

it's been a while since I've watched misfits, but: kelly's grammar and word choice is more important, I think, than her accent. yes, her accent is supposed to be strong, but in and of itself, it's not a difficult accent to understand. it's more the slang that throws people off, and given that kelly comes across as a chav and has a manner of speaking similar to that which you'd expect from a chav, it's that — it's her idiolect and her word choice and the structure and construction of her sentences that are incomprehensible, as well as the way she chooses to say it (that is: forcefully).

outside of that, the major problem with writing out an accent phonetically is that not everyone would read it the same way, and no-one hears an accent the same way. you could write it out so that it reads perfectly to you, in your accent, but I (for example) could be sitting there going "what the fuck accent is this supposed to be, exactly?". you just have to look at the number of americans that turn round and say "I don't have an accent". everyone has an accent, it's just that one's perception of it is entirely dependent on where they're from.
