Welp

Villains!

(Anonymous) 2013-05-31 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, anons. I'm looking for any and all advice you can give me about playing villains successfully in DWRP.

The character I have in mind doesn't do random acts of evil just because, but when she decides to do something she's very go big or go home/go out with a bang. She doesn't tell everyone EVERYTHING she's done ever, but she doesn't hide the fact that she's evil, either. I'm looking for anything (general guides are A-OK!), but I would specifically like to get advice on what I should/shouldn't have her do, what kind of CR I can expect or try to go for, and what kind of pitfalls I should expect along the way.

Alright, I'm trying to keep this somewhat short.

I Actions → Consequences
a) Be careful with what you have her do. Things that have a great impact on the game are amazing to play out, sure, but there will always be that group of people that won't let your character get away without punishment. Make sure these things are decided on before the actual plot goes down, it'll make everything easier.
b) If you feel as if the possible consequences could ruin your fun/change your character in ways you don't want, try to discuss alternative routes with your fellow players. If this doesn't work out, do not do whatever you planned to do. It'll blow up in your face if you're unlucky.

II Events
Often, in-game events will offer wonderful possibilities for your villain.
a) Don't overdo it. Even if there are several events that could be used in her favor, try to limit it somewhat.
b) Check out whether the nature of the event and the plotting the other muns did for it would actually work with a villain plot thrown in. Nothing is worse than one player plot changing the event for everyone.

III DO!
a) Try to find a game that looks as if some villain action could go without breaking. This kinda sorta depends on the nature of her homeworld, though. Basically, a slice of life only game would probably not be a good choice, while something in the horror-corner might give you more leeway.
b) This comes entirely from my own experience, but: games that have some villains in them generally work better than games that severely lacks villains. A lack of villains usually draws a bunch of heroes looking to beat someone up, and unless that's your thing...
c) Talk to the mods about plots and the likes. It just makes your life so much easier.
d) Have fun, but keep other people's fun in mind, too. Your character doesn't need to rain on everyone's parade, but you also can't always stick back. Try to find a healthy balance.

IV DON'T!
a) Never do something without plotting. Chances are that it'll bite your ass big time.
b) Don't bite off more than you can chew. Something that brings the wrath of the entire game down on her might be IC, but it's not exactly helpful in regard to future endeavors. Depending on what your character can do, try to limit participation slots if necessary. A lot of people might want stuff to happen to their characters, but you might not get around to everyone/it'd make too big a wave.
c) Don't fret too much. Sometimes, stuff will not work out, no matter what you do. It's the way it is.

V CR!
a) Your character will make enemies. This depends on her personality, but you should definitely prepare for a load of negative CR - which can be diverse and interesting, too!
b) Is your character the manipulative type? If so, she could talk a couple of good ones into doing her bidding... The possibilities are damn near endless.
c) Give strange CR a shot! 'My' villain ended up becoming close friends with a completely sweet high school girl, which I never expected - and now it's among my favorite CR.
d) ALLIES, ALLIES, ALLIES. Be it fellow villains or morally ambiguous types, misguided good ones, or whatever else there is: your character needs them and it's not hard to find some, especially with other villains around.

VI THE PITFALLS
Here's hoping you avoid most of them.
a) People might out your villain as a villain. Which won't do as much harm, given that you said she's open about it, but it can put a damper on things nonetheless.
b) There might be the 'hero'-player who will be hellbent on fucking your character over because they're evil. Might involve butthurt.
c) Infomodding will happen. Whether it's someone ~knowing~ your character's intention or ~totally seeing everything coming~, it's annoying but nearly inevitable.
d) Some people really, really, really hate seeing the villain win. Ignore it if it's unjustified, accept that your character can't always win at other times.

I am sure I forgot a couple of things, but I hope this might help you at least a little.
