Hey, I like your ideas, and I (and a couple of friends of mine) would be willing to take on the task of modding and setting up this game. We did some brainstorming today and here is the premise and game structure we got together. Any input/feedback from you, or any anons, would be much obliged. We would all like to know how the ideas are received before continuing any planning so that we might be able to tweak or add/remove any concepts.

BASIC PREMISE AND OVERVIEW.
“In the far flung future, a star is dying and a frontier remains uncharted. From across space, time, and innumerable universes, people have been brought aboard the spaceship FREYA to solve both of these problems in one fell swoop. On the surface, their mission is simple: roam the cosmic heavens in search of planets that can provide the materials needed to prevent the star from collapsing. At the same time, these previously-undiscovered celestial bodies must be introduced to YGGDRASIL, the vast agency that sits firmly at the head of all enterprises in this era of intergalactic travel. YGGDRASIL is the driving force behind spaceships like FREYA, and while the dangers of space are as bountiful as its wonders, YGGDRASIL is confident that the crew selected for these important missions will not fail.”

The spaceship is a massive hub of community and industry, governed by a crew made up of both player characters and NPCs. As a vessel that must make do with every available resource, education and training in various fields (from battle mech combat to aquaculture and much else) are offered to utilize the full strengths of every newcomer. Characters will be given a stipend (spent through a credit card) and otherwise have their basic needs provided for; there will also be several opportunities to earn extra credits.

Per company policy to prevent pregnancies that would compromise FREYA’s mission, everyone onboard is female. Characters will have the situation explained to them upon arrival, as the only mystery here is what lies beyond the stars; unfortunately, it’s impossible for the crew of FREYA to return characters to their own worlds due to issues with the teleportation system that brought them aboard in the first place. (Drops will also be attributed to malfunctions.)

SHIP STRUCTURE AND INDUSTRY.

FREYA is, to put it lightly, an enormous ship - or if you wanted to get technical about it, many ships.

Composed of an immense carrier with several smaller vessels attached to it, the central ship houses the passengers and crew, along with the vast majority of facilities that would see use by such individuals. The secondary shuttles are responsible for various tasks such as producing the oxygen pumped throughout FREYA, providing adequate space to farm crops and engage in aquaculture, and handling assorted other processes that are crucial to sustaining life aboard FREYA during lengthy missions.

The inside of the carrier that’s accessible to the general public is divided into personal quarters, training and educational facilities, dining areas, recreation centers and spacecraft hangars, as well as an extensive medbay. Information booths, assembly halls and automated vendors are established throughout the ship for characters to review the data about other planets that’s been collected so far, gather for debriefing and deployment, and receive their allotted mana/potion/whathaveyou with a swipe of the credit card that’s been issued to them.

The secondary shuttles are generally the territory of NPC members of the crew, given how integral they are to FREYA functioning at peak capacity. However, player characters will be allowed access to certain shuttles under supervision, and can even apply for a limited range of jobs. Further employment can be found on the main ship: characters can enlist their services in the medbay and dining halls, as an instructor’s assistant during classes or training sessions, and much, much else, including more exciting pursuits such as clearing minor asteroid fields via spacejet lasers and harvesting solar energy.

COMMUNICATION.

- Characters will be entrusted with a communication device as part of the orientation process. However, the device will be stationary and unable to be removed from the character’s personal quarters. This is to both foster shipwide unity by emphasizing face-to-face interaction and cut down on static interference jamming crucial frequencies.

- The primary function of the communication device is a personal inbox where characters can check messages. To this end, IC inboxes are required and threads made within them will count toward AC.

- Spread across the ship are interactive holographic bulletin boards that allow characters to post temporary messages and announcements. These devices are programmed to automatically erase messages that are more than 3 (in-game) days old. (This is for the purposes of IC coordination and will not count toward AC.)

- While exploring a new planet, characters will have a communication device fitted to their spacesuits that can only transmit to the staff onboard FREYA directly responsible for their group.

PLANETARY EXPLORATION, HOSTILE ENCOUNTERS, EXPLOSIONS AND MORE.

- Speaking of new planets, groups will be taken down to investigate them once every other month in search of materials that will save the dying star. Information about the planet will also be gathered and transmitted to YGGDRASIL at this time. Details about the terrain and inhabitants will be released OOCly before groups are sent down, but ICly revealed and collected by player characters.

- From time to time, those aboard FREYA will be called upon to defend the ship from space pirates or to clear the path before them of obstacles.

- While FREYA is a spaceship to be proud of, it’s far from invincible or infallible. Unexpected challenges will periodically crop up to test the mettle of the crew, from malfunctioning plumbing to an outbreak of disease to an invasion of alien lifeforms.

- Once the star has been saved from collapsing, the captain of FREYA will receive new mission orders from YGGDRASIL. This would mark a new phase in the overarching plot with an inclusion of diplomatic-based objectives.

This all sounds great, and definitely a game I would be willing to play in! You definitely have my vote, and out of this I wouldn't change anything.

Glad to have your approval! It means a lot, since we did use a lot of your ideas as inspiration. We'll give you and the previous people who worked on the game concept credit if it gets off the ground.

That's more than I could ask for, considering I just want to see it happen. If there's anything else you'd like to talk about feel free to contact me through this journal.

I'll be sure to do that. I might bug you for ideas at some point.

other notes

[personal profile] spacejam 2013-02-03 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
- Just adding that in this game concept, communal showers would not be a thing, but assigned rooms might be. We didn't hammer that out yet.

- OCs would be allowed from their own universes, as well. There would be no base requirement to app a canon character before a player could app an OC. If you would prefer to start with an OC, that's fine.

- I do not mind CR AUs but I am willing to work out some form of a compromise if the idea gets a lot of dissent. I simply don't want to bar players from joining based on their desire to pick up game development from games that have closed before they could finish out important character development.

- Genderswaps would be allowed.

- Not sold on the idea of AU stacking (genderswaps + CR AUs) and would ideally prefer one or the other, but I'm willing to hear out any arguments for it.

comm device clarification

[personal profile] spacebutter 2013-02-03 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
It belatedly occurred to me that one of the points about the communication devices could have been made more clear: when exploring a planet, the spacesuit's device can communicate to other members of their investigation group as well as the staff aboard FREYA.

Just didn't want there to be instances where people in group A was casually chitchatting with everyone on FREYA when they are supposed to be gathering alien eggs or crystals or whathaveyou.

I noticed that when I was copy-pasting this and should've asked about it, but it was also 3 in the morning so I was not in full possession of common sense at the time. smh at myself

Thanks for clarifying for everyone, bud!

This works a LOT better for me than the other game idea. It's less stagnant and offers more opportunity to individual players. Kudos to everyone who's going to run it/came up with it.

I don't want to turn this into an us vs. them scenario, but thanks for your support, anon. My hope is that there will still be interest in this once it opens.

Thank you, anon. I'm so happy to see interest in this, and we are all working very hard to get it up and running. More details will happen next game ideas thread or whenever we have more ideas hammered out. Whichever comes first.
