[DISCUSS] Mm fresh baked bees

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

General - creepy characters

(Anonymous) 2013-02-03 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
Any general tips for someone who's distinctly creepy as hell? I don't expect characters to be universally creeped out, but being able to put across a creepy air to tags would be good. Not something I've done before.

Bonus - creepy children in particular.

Descriptions are really helpful with creepy character, moreso then what they're saying. Describe how they stand, like if they normally hold themselves with a slouch and a slightly cocked head. Instead of saying they walked, think of creepier verbs like shuffled or scuttled. Little descriptions like that can really give your character a creepier air without trying to go over board with it.

Doing invasive things may count. Having your character stare unblinking at whoever's speaking, or move to close to someone. And not necessarily creepy, but dismissiveness of bad-sounding things can get people's warning flags up.

"Oh, it's all right. Not many people will be there then. It'll be nice!"

And maybe more vague, 'visceral' lines, like "I should lace their thoughts through my skin more often."

That's off the top of my head, really.

Throwing in with above anons as well as a tip that might be just as helpful.

Reread the books and writings of authors that have made your own skin crawl before. Find new books or writings that your peers/others have found creepy. Discern what in those writings made you feel creeped out, what made them feel creeped out, then try utilizing that. Don't plagiarize, of course-- merely play around with your sentences, your descriptions, your structure. Share it with people you do and do not know and see what they think in order to find the balance you want.
