[D] Ashes to ashes
Rundown:
rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.
Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. Please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. We don't need several threads soliciting photo evidence of body parts, and we already know that we only care about yaoi. Failure to comply will only result in deletions and butthurt. "People may notice site slowdown/cache error pages. We're working on fixing. You can help: finish posts at 3k comments, not 5k or more." - Dreamwidth@Twitter
Rules:
Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 01:50 am (UTC)(link)If the game you have in mind operates on a communicator network, consider how your character would use it for interaction with others. Would they ask for somebody good with machines to tinker and make their device read text posts aloud? Would their device be permanently on so that they can catch stuff happening without having to find a button to press? If so, does it transmit from their end as well, for accidental posts?
Another thing you might want to think about is how long the character has been blind for. Somebody who has been blind from birth would need certain stuff usually taken for granted, like colors, explained to them. Somebody who was blinded a long time ago may have vague memories of how such things work, or associate specific memories and images with triggers, such as scent. Somebody who has been blind only shortly before their canon point will have to learn how to cope with it: messed-up depth perception for partial blindness, using a cane, and so on.
This is pretty general advice. Any particular ability you have in mind? I have played blind characters before, we could brainstorm in detail if you'd like.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 04:00 am (UTC)(link)The character in question is an OC and I was thinking of it two ways depending on places I may app them. The general idea was that they would not be true blind, but only able to see chi, or something similar. So most details would be lost, and that's what I wanted advice on, as well as things to look out for that would be taken for granted for those not visually impaired.
I didn't even think about the communicators having to be modified, for instance. That would be a great start in a new game, actually.
Uh, that's all I got for now, besides maybe recommendations for blind characters to look up? I'm getting really excited about this idea, and I'm very glad you responded!

(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 04:41 am (UTC)(link)Also consider how other senses might compensate for the absence of detail in sight. Marvel's Daredevil, for instance, has extremely heightened senses that help him observe a person's behavior. You mentioned Terezi using taste. Other characters who use a second sense to make up for sight I can think of is the Kabane family from Tenjou Tenge, who can track needles by "threads" of scent and speak of people by the smells coming off them (even for abstract things which are more concepts than actual smells).
As for things visual-capable people take for granted, I suggest you look up medical information that touches on helping friends and family who have had damage to their sight. From personal experience, it's easier for you to react as a thread goes instead of trying to prepare for all these potentially notable things.
Finally, you can look at http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HandicappedBadass, which, while not exclusively a list of blind characters, has a fair number I didn't bring up above you can use for inspiration.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-06 05:31 am (UTC)(link)And these references were just the thing I needed, thank you so much! I don't seem to have any more questions for now, but I'll be sure to ask if I do. This is all a HUGE help.
